Why Reframing Aging?

The Reframing Aging Initiative is a long-term social change endeavor designed to improve the public’s understanding of what aging means and the many ways that older people contribute to our society. This greater understanding will counter ageism and guide our nation’s approach to ensuring supportive policies and programs for us all as we move through the life course. 

Watch this short video, Frame of Mind: The Why and How of Reframing Aging, to learn why our incomplete understanding of aging perpetuates negative stereotypes of older people and how we can do something about it by changing the way we communicate about aging.

We Are All Aging

In this short video, watch how one simple change can produce big results: using the more inclusive terms "we" and "us" in place of "they" and "them" helps all of us to remember that we are all aging. This understanding will lead to support for the policies and programs that we all need to thrive at every age.

Try This, Not That

This video highlights terms to avoid and themes to advance when communicating about aging. Starting with a shared vision instead focusing on traps like fatalism is a more engaging way to explain the whole story of aging.

This comprehensive guide uses the evidence-informed findings from the Reframing Aging Initiative and the best practices guidance from the APA, AMA, and AP style guides to show you how to apply age-inclusive, bias-free language in your communications. To make it easier to identify wording that can be improved, we point out terms to avoid and offer terms to advance.
